Report: Pedro Martinez Will Not Pitch This Season

Pedro Martinez is done with baseball for the year.

Martinez won’t join a major league club this season, but he is not ready to retire from baseball, according to ESPNDeportes.com.

"This doesn't mean that Pedro is announcing his retirement from baseball because it's possible that he will change his mind for next year," Fernando Cuza, Martinez’s agent, told ESPNDeportes on Wednesday. "But today, he asked me to call all the teams that were interested to announce his decision."

Multiple teams were reportedly interested in Martinez's services for the second half, including the Philadelphia Phillies — the team Martinez pitched for last season.

Martinez was solid for the Phillies after joining them last August as he went 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA and helped lead the Phillies to their second straight National League pennant. In the postseason,however, he was 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA in three starts.

Martinez, an 18-year veteran, is 219-100 in his career with a 2.93 ERA. His 3,154 strikeouts rank 13th on the all-time list.

The former Red Sox ace was last seen throwing from a mound opening night at Fenway Park, where he delivered the ceremonial first pitch on opening night.
