Report: AL Club Claims Jonathan Papelbon on Waivers, But Closer Unlikely to Leave Boston

Add another chapter to Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon's eventful season.

According to FoxSports.com, Papelbon was claimed on waivers by an American League team. But as the report (and logic) says, the Red Sox are likely to pull Papelbon off waivers in order to keep him on the roster.

While it is always news to learn that a certain player was made available, it is not uncommon for most MLB players to be placed on waivers. If no teams claim a player, he can be dealt to any team. In the case of Papelbon, the Red Sox can simply take him off waivers, thereby making him ineligible to be traded this month.

On Tuesday night, Papelbon became the first pitcher in MLB history to record 25 saves or more in his first five seasons in the league.
