World Sauna Championship Takes Life of Russian Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy

A competition that involves nothing but sitting became a death match on Sunday.

The 12th installment of the World Sauna Championships held in Heinola, Finland, will likely be the last after Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy died in the finals of the event. Both he and defending champion Timo Kaukonen collapsed after six minutes in the 200-degree sauna and incurred major burns.

Emergency workers pulled both men from the sauna, but it was too late for Ladyzhenskiy, says All Headline News.

The saunas used in 2010 were apparently far more extreme than those used in past years.
