Felix Doubront was named the Red Sox' Minor League Pitcher of the Year and first baseman Anthony Rizzo and catcher Ryan Lavarnway shared Offensive Player of the Year honors, the organization announced Saturday.
Doubront, 22, went 8-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket this year. He was 4-0 with the Sea Dogs before earning a promotion May 20 to the PawSox, where he posted a 3.16 ERA.
Signed as an international free agent in 2004, the left-hander made his major league debut at Fenway Park on June 18, the day Manny Ramirez returned with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Doubront picked up the win that day after giving up three earned runs in five innings.
He made two more spot starts for the big club before joining the Red Sox for good in early August as a reliever. Doubront went 1-0 with two saves and a 4.66 ERA in nine appearances out of the bullpen for Boston.
Both Rizzo and Lavarnway began the year in Single-A Salem before earning promotions to Portland and continuing to swing hot bats.
The 21-year-old Rizzo led the Red Sox minor leagues in home runs (25) and ranked second to Lavarnway in RBIs (100). He did most of that damage after the promotion, batting .263 with 20 homers, 30 doubles and 80 RBIs in only 107 games for the Sea Dogs.
Rizzo set a Portland franchise record with 32 RBIs in August. The former seventh round pick is also noted as an outstanding defensive first baseman.
Lavarnway finished with a .288 average, 22 home runs and 102 RBIs between Salem and Portland. He was named player of the week once in both leagues. The 23-year-old hit an impressive .340 with runners in scoring position for the Sea Dogs.
Another Portland player honored Saturday was center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin, who was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the minor league system. Lin committed three errors in 338 chances in 118 games. He also hit .275 with 26 stolen bases for the Sea Dogs.
Jeremy Hazelbaker, a fourth round pick last year, was named the Base Runner of the Year. He led the organization with 63 steals, the most by a Boston farmhand since Gus Burgess had 68 in 1981. Hazelbaker, 23, hit .267 with 12 home runs and 62 RBIs for Single-A Greenville.
The Red Sox also named right-hander Raul Alcantara as the Latin Program Pitcher of the Year and shortstop Xander Bogaerts as the Latin Program Player of the Year. Alcantara was 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts for the club's Dominican Summer League team. Bogaerts paced the team in hitting (.314), homers (three), RBIs (42) and several other offensive categories. Both are 17.
