FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots must be optimistic about offensive lineman Nick Kaczur.
New England released outside linebacker Marques Murrell on Monday in a move that was necessary to stay within the league's 53-man roster limit. Offensive lineman Quinn Ojinnaka, who faced a Week 1 league suspension, did not count as a member of the active roster until Monday.
Because of Ojinnaka's status, the Patriots were expected to do one of three things Monday: Release Ojinnaka, place Kaczur (back surgery) on season-ending injured reserve, or release someone else (in this case, it was Murrell).
By keeping Kaczur on the roster, it's a good indication the Patriots believe he'll contribute this season.
"The fact that he's still on the roster means that at some point we think he'll be back," head coach Bill Belichick said.
