Red Sox Call Up Southpaw Rich Hill From Pawtucket

The Red Sox selected lefty Rich Hill from Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday, bringing their active major league roster to 35 players.

To make room for Hill on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred first baseman Kevin Youkilis to the 60-day disabled list. Youkilis had season-ending surgery last month to repair a torn muscle in his right thumb.

Hill, a native of Milton, Mass., signed with Boston as a minor league free agent June 30. In 19 games (six starts) with Pawtucket, he was 3-1 with a 3.74 ERA, striking out 55 men in 53 innings.

The 30-year-old Hill is 21-20 with a 4.87 ERA in 78 career outings (70 starts) in five major league seasons with the Cubs and Orioles.
