Brett Favre almost singlehandedly sunk the Jets' playoff hopes in 2008. As a result, the team apparently wanted to bring him back.
"They asked if I wanted to come back," Favre, speaking on a conference call, said of the Jets, according to ESPN.com. "I was like, 'I don't want to go though surgery and all that stuff.'"
"They" referred to GM Mike Tannenbaum, owner Woody Johnson and then-new head coach Rex Ryan as the Jets prepared for their future. When Favre seemed unwilling to undergo surgery on his biceps, the Jets began moving toward Mark Sanchez. However, Favre remained the Jets' top backup plan if they couldn't land the USC star.
Favre said he likely would have considered returning if he had been recruited more aggressively — an idea that is sort of bizarre but makes sense once you realize it's Brett Favre you're talking about.
"I just wish it had ended better. That was my only regret," Favre said of his time in New York, when he threw 22 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
When asked if he expects to hear boos on Monday night, Favre seemed to think it's not guaranteed.
"I think … I would hope, like with any other place I've played, people will appreciate the effort I've given," he said. "Trust me, I take a lot of the blame, but I did all I could do."
He's either lying or is delusional, because even if he had wanted to return in '09, Jets fans wouldn't have wanted him. He should probably start preparing for some boos.
