Still, it took months, perhaps years, for those two to lose their jobs.
University of Miami head coach Randy Shannon was not so lucky.
Prior to Saturday’s Miami-South Florida game, a fan flew a banner behind an airplane around Sun Life Stadium reading “4 YEARS 0 ACC Titles LOTS OF EXCUSES FIRE SHANNON.”
Hours later, following the Canes’ 23-20 overtime loss to the Bulls, Shannon was let go as coach — even though he was given a four year extension prior to the season.
Miami was expected to compete for a BCS bid, perhaps even national title in 2010 after a promising 9-4 season last year and a high preseason ranking. They finished the regular season 7-5.
Earlier this week, Shannon was fatalistic but untroubled about his job security. “If they do it, they do it. I think someone will give me another job,” he told the Associated Press.

“In the end I’m pleased with the performance and the goals I scored, personally I was very impressed with myself. I’ve scored five before but it was a long time ago back.”
— Dimitar Berbatov, on his record-tying five-goal performance for Manchester United
Things aren’t going to end well for Derek Jeter.
“Captain Jeter should have taken his lead from Captain Tek from a few years ago. The Sox offered him a fair salary, but Tek thought the grass was greener. he finally re-signed for a lot less money. Could this be the future of the Yankee Captain, (WHO CARES)!”
