What was widely expected was formalized on Thursday, as the Red Sox declined the option on Bill Hall's contract, thereby making the 30-year-old utilityman a free agent.

The news came in the team's announcement on the exercising of the option on David Ortiz's contract.

The team also announced it declined the option on the contract of infielder Felipe Lopez.

Lopez, also 30, played in just four games for the Red Sox, hitting .267 with an RBI in 16 at-bats. Lopez joined the Red Sox after rejecting a claim by the San Diego Padres.

Hall would have earned $9.25 million had the team picked up the option year.
