Ryan Spooner, Joe Colborne Hold Top Spots Among Bruins Prospects List

Think the Bruins might have had a few scouts on hand in London, Ontario last Sunday?

That was the site of the first showdown between two of Boston’s top prospects since Ryan Spooner was dealt to Kingston earlier this month. Spooner and the Frontenacs paid a visit to London, home of fellow 2010 second-round pick Jared Knight, and both Bruins’ prospects put on a show.

Spooner scored an unassisted goal just 16 seconds into play, and added an assist on Kingston’s third goal as the Frontenacs took a 3-0 lead in the first period.

But London wasn’t about to roll over, and Knight’s goal at 19:29 of the third completed a dramatic comeback, tying the game at 3-3 and forcing overtime.

It ultimately went to a shootout, with Knight shooting first for London and scoring, while Spooner shot third for Kingston and also scored. But one more of Knight’s teammates was able to score as well, as London took the dramatic 4-3 win.

The real winner though might be the Bruins, who will have both of these players in Black and Gold within the next few years. For now, they both remain just prospects, but how high do they rank in our top 10 prospect list this week after their dramatic showdown?

  Knight’s team may have won, but Spooner stays in the top spot after picking up another goal and three assists in three games this week. He was also a plus-3, giving him 3-5-8 totals and a plus-2 rating in five games with Kingston and 13-14-27 totals and a minus-2 in 19 games overall in the OHL this season.

  Joe Colborne, C

  Colborne had a relatively quiet week, but did score a goal in Sunday’s 4-1 win at Manchester. That gives him 6-6-12 totals in 18 games in his first full season in Providence, though he is a minus-1.

  Jared Knight, C/RW

  Besides his heroics against Spooner and Kingston, Knight added a goal and two assists in a 7-3 loss to Windsor. For the season, Knight now has 9-14-23 totals and is a plus-2 in 22 games.

  Steve Kampfer, D

  Kampfer responded well to a one-game suspension for an elbowing incident last week, as he collected a goal and two assists and was a plus-4 in his first game back, leading Providence to a 4-1 win at Manchester. He now has 3-11-14 totals and is a plus-9 in 17 games in his first pro season, though he did suffer a minor knee injury on Wednesday.

  Yury Alexandrov, D

  Alexandrov chipped in an assist and was a plus-1 in three games for Providence this week. After a run of minor penalties, he also avoided the penalty box in all three games. He has 4-5-9 totals and is a plus-2 in 18 games in his first season in North America.

  Jamie Arniel, C

  Arniel had another big week with the Baby B’s, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist, 12 shots and a plus-2 rating in three games. His goals included an overtime winner at Bridgeport in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. For the season, Arniel leads Providence with 9-6-15 totals and 61 shots in 18 games.

  Max Sauve, C/LW

  Sauve remains out with an injury to his left wrist. He has missed 14 games and remains sidelined. Sauve had 3-1-4 totals and was a plus-1 in four games before the injury.

  Matt Bartkowski, D

  Bartkowski had just one assist and was even in three games this week. He has just 2-5-7 totals and is a minus-1 in his first pro season out of Ohio State.

  Ryan Button, D

  Button and the struggling Raiders both had big nights last Friday as he collected his first goal of the season and added two assists in Prince Albert’s 9-3 win at Lethbridge. Button had another assist as the Raiders slipped back to their losing way with three straight losses, but now stands at 1-11-12 with 19 PIMs and a minus-6 rating through 26 games.

  Craig Cunningham, C

  Cunningham’s Giants had just one game for the second straight week, and that lull in activity has helped him fall out of the WHL scoring lead. He did have an assist in his only game and now has 8-33-41 totals in just 24 games, but Medicine Hat’s Linden Vey now leads the league scoring race with 16-27-43 totals.
