Universisty of Miami Football Coach Randy Shannon Fired After Overtime Loss to South Florida

Come Sunday morning, the University of Miami will be in the market for a new football coach.

According to the university’s website, head coach Randy Shannon was fired Saturday night, just hours after the team’s stunning overtime loss to South Florida in its final game of the season.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” said athletic director Kirby Hocutt. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

Shannon, who coached Miami to a 28-22 record through four seasons, had just signed a four-year contract extension before the 2010 season. Miami’s 7-5 finish was even more disappointing after taking into account a promising 5-2 start.
