Final, Ducks 3-0: A disappointing night at the Garden for the Bruins, who run into a red-hot Jonas Hiller and fall to the Ducks.
The Bruins came out flat, managing just two shots in the first 16:20 as they fell behind 1-0. They poured plenty of shots on Hiller after that, finishing with a 45-25 edge in shots, but many were from the perimeter and Hiller made the big saves when needed.
The Bruins will look to bounce back when they close out their homestand Thursday against Atlanta.
Third Period, 16:57, Ducks 3-0: Hiller is really battling to hold on to this shutout now, as he stops another flurry of shots around his crease.
The Bruins have put 44 shots on him without scoring.
Third Period, 15:16, Ducks 3-0: Thornton has a chance in front but can't put it home as it clangs off the crossbar, as the Bruins' frustrations continue.
Third Period, 12:10, Ducks 3-0: This is definitely not the Bruins' night, as Seguin is robbed in front off a nice feed by Bergeron from behind the net.
Third Period, 10:42, Ducks 3-0: The Ducks call timeout here, not sure why Randy Carlyle needed that break, but he used it.
Third Period, 10:02, Ducks 3-0: Completing the new lines, Seguin is now with Bergeron and Recchi. Only the fourth line of Paille, Campbell and Thornton remains unchanged.
Third Period, 7:59, Ducks 3-0: Julien has switched up some line combinations here, as Horton is now with Savard and Ryder instead of Seguin, and Wheeler is with Krejci and Lucic.
Third Period, 4:40, Ducks 3-0: Frustration is setting in, as Chara goes after Perry and pops him with a gloved punch behind the play. Perry skates away from the big man and no penalties are called.
Third Period, 3:50, Ducks 3-0: The Bruins haven't exactly come out strong here in the third, as the Ducks have had the better of the chances so far, forcing Thomas to make some big saves.
Third Period, 1:35, Ducks 3-0: Thomas robs Joffrey Lupul in front, then ties up the puck in a scramble in the crease to keep the Bruins from falling further behind.
Third Period, 0:00, Ducks 3-0: The final frame is under way, with the Bruins needing a major comeback to get back into this one.
The Ducks are 9-0-2 when leading after two periods, while the Bruins are 2-8-3 when trailing after two.
Second Intermission Notes: Not much as gone right for the Bruins in this one. They started slow and allowed Anaheim to get that crucial first goal in the opening period.
Then they dominated play for much of the second, only to see the Ducks score twice more to extend the lead to 3-0.
Boston now faces some long odds to come back in this one, as Jonas Hiller has been in a zone in the Anaheim net.
End Second Period, Ducks 3-0: And the Bruins head to the locker room under a chorus of boos after a frustrating second period.
The Bruins outshot Anaheim 18-8 in the period and 27-15 for the game, but the Ducks scored the only two goals in the second to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the third.
Second Period, 18:20, Ducks 2-0: Tyler Seguin showing some defensive commitment as he blocks a blast from the point off teh stick of Luca Sbisa.
Second Period, 15:34, Ducks 2-0: The Bruins come up empty on the power play as they fall further behind in a disappointing effort so far in this one.
Second Period, 15:05, Ducks 3-0: The Ducks dominate that special teams, as they have three golden scoring chances shorthanded, with Corey Perry converting the third for a 3-0 lead.
He came down the right wing, cut to the middle and after losing control briefly, he regained possession at the top of the crease and banged it home.
That came after Thomas made a toe save on Bobby Ryan and McMillan missed the net on a bid from the left circle.
Second Period, 13:34, Ducks 2-0: The Bruins will get another chance on the power play, as Ryan Getzlaf goes off for tripping.
The Bruins hold a 24-11 edge in shots, but still trail by two goals.
Second Period, 11:57, Ducks 2-0: Kampfer has returned to the game and was on the ice for the Bruins again. Good to see that fall into the boards wasn't as badd as it first appeared.
Second Period, 11:02, Ducks 2-0: The Bruins come up empty on that power play and remain down by two.
THe Ducks actually nearly scored shorthanded as Todd Marchant slipped one through Thomas at the right post, but Bergeron cleared it off the goal line before it could cross.
Second Period, 9:02, Ducks 2-0: Another Bruins defenseman goes hard into the boards, as Steven Kampfer is hurt when he slams headfirst into the wall in gthe corner with some help from Selanne, who gets two minutes for boarding on the play.
Kampfer was down for several minutes, but eventually was able to skate off with some help.
Second Period, 8:16, Ducks 2-0: The Bruins are playing the role of the Caps in this one, as they're pouring shots on goal but can't get anything past Hiller.
The Bruins have a 17-9 edge in shots now, but still trail 2-0.
Second Period, 4:45, Ducks 2-0: The Ducks double the lead as Teemu Selanne fires a shot on net form the right side. Thomas makes the save and Selanne fans on a backhander on the rebound, but Lubomir Visnovsky steps into the rebound and one-times it home from the high slot.
Those two Anaheim shots were the first since the first period, as Boston had a 12-0 run on shots before that sequence.
Second Period, 1:52, Ducks 1-0: The gloves are off, as Greg Campbell tries to spark the B's by taking on Kyle Chipchura off the draw in the Bruins end.
Bit of an unusual start as the combatants were the centers and had to take the draw before dropping the gloves. Chipchura was in control early, but Campbell landed some shots late before another flurry from Chipchure. We'll see if that wakes up the Bruins.
Second Period, 0:00, Ducks 1-0: The middle frame is under way, with the Bruins trying to buck history as they are 0-6-2 when trailing after one this season. The Ducks are 13-3-2 when leading after the first period.
First Intermission Notes: The Bruins snapped their streak of slow starts on Saturday when they jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Washington, but they fell back into their old pattern in this one.
Anaheim struck first just 5:57 in and held a 7-2 edge in shots in the first 16:20 of the period. That was on the heels of the Capitals' 26-2 edge in shots in the third period on Saturday.
Boston finally came alive late, outshooting Anaheim 7-0 in the final 3:40, but Jonas Hiller weathered the storm to maintain the Ducks' 1-0 lead into the break. The Bruins still have as many missed shots (9) as shots on net, while the Ducks have blocked eight other attempts.
Boston has also been outhit 11-6, another reflection of the lack of jump at the start of this one. The one bright spot has been in the faceoff circle, where the Bruins are 11-6 (65 percent).
End First Period, Ducks 1-0: The Bruins head into the first intermission down a goal after falling back into their old pattern of starting slow.
The finished the period with a 9-7 edge in shots, but had just two shots on goal for more than 16 minutes, while Anaheim jumped out to the early lead.
First Period, 18:51, Ducks 1-0: Lucic nearly ties it as he steals the puck from Lubomir Visnovsky in front, but he can't put the shot home.
First Period, 16:49, Ducks 1-0: Anaheim defenseman Toni Lydman is shaken up as he is hit by a deflected Zdeno Chara shot in front of the net.
First Period, 16:22, Ducks 1-0: Marc Savard gets in a shoving match after the whistle, so out of the TV timeout the Ducks put out their fourth line with tough guy George Parros, and the Bruins respond by keeping Savard, Seguin and Ryder on the ice?
First Period, 14:56, Ducks 1-0: Thomas comes up with a big save on a tough shot from the slot by Bobby Ryan that nearly handcuffed the Bruins netminder.
First Period, 13:50, Ducks 1-0: Lots of missed shots in this one, as both teams are struggling to find the range and hit the net. The Bruins have been especially off target, as they still have just two shots on net.
First Period, 10:12, Ducks 1-0: After being outshot 26-2 in the third period on Saturday, the Bruins have just one shot more than halfway through the first in this one. The Ducks have five.
First Period, 5:57, Ducks 1-0: The Ducks strike first in this one, as Brandon McMillan scores from in front.
Luca Sbisa's shot from the left point hit McMillan in the slot, and McMillan was able to collect the loose puck and flip it in before Thomas could recover.
First Period, 4:49, 0-0: The Bruins have their first scoring bids, as Krejci nearly scores from the left post off a turnover, then Nathan Horton sends a blast just wide on a one-timer from the right corcle.
First Period, 3:08, 0-0: The Bruins survive that first test, successfully killing off the Krejci penalty as the sides are now back at even strength.
First Period, 1:08, 0-0: Anaheim will get an early power play, as David Krejci is called for goaltender interference as he crashes the crease on Jonas Hiller after a rush down the left wing by Milan Lucic.
First Period, 0:00, 0-0: And we're under way here at the Garden. There are some empty seats, but a solid turnout considering the nightmares so many had getting here with the snow and traffic.
It was well worth it if you made it though for the Rene Rancournaments alone, as the Bruins gave out Christmas Tree ornaments of the legendary anthem singer that play bits of several holiday songs. If the game as half as good as that giveaway, we're in for a treat in this one.
7:25 p.m.: The scratches are in and there's no surprises for the Bruins, who have no healthy bodies to scratch.
Brad Marchand (undisclosed) and Mark Stuart (broken hand) are out.
The Ducks have scratched defensemen Paul Mara, a former Bruin from belmont, Mass., and Sheldon Brookbank, whose brother Wade played briefly for the Bruins in 2006-07. That puts Andreas Lilja and Andy Sutton back in the lineup after sitting out Saturday's 4-2 loss in Carolina.
The Ducks have also reunited their top line of Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, as that unit will start the game. Ryan had been replaced by Teemu Selanne on that unit on Saturday. Lubomir Visnovsky and Toni Lydman start on defense, with Jonas Hiller in goal.
The Bruins counter with Patrice Bergeron, Blake Wheeler and Mark Recchi up front, Zdeno Chara and Johnny Boychuk on the blue line and Tim Thomas in net.
7:10 p.m.: No changes for the Bruins' lines in warm-ups as Daniel Paille slides into Brad Marchand's spot on the fourth line.
The rest of the combinations remain intact from Saturday, as do the defense pairs.
Lucic-Krejci-Horton
Wheeler-Bergeron-Recchi
Seguin-Savard-Ryder
Paille-Campbell-Thornton
Chara-Boychuk
Seidenberg-Kampfer
Ference-McQuaid
7 p.m.: Tim Thomas and Jonas Hiller led the teams out on the ice for warm-ups. That will be the goaltending matchup as expected.
The Bruins are waering their road whites for this one, allowing Anaheim to don their dark black and red alternate sweaters.
6:30 p.m.: The Bruins and Ducks will clash in just over an hour, as ths one is a later start than usual at 7:30 to accommodate the Versus broadcast.
The Bruins did hold their pre-game skate as usual in the morning, with Tim Thomas the first goalie off the ice, indicating he will get the start again for Boston.
Jonas Hiller is expected to be in the net for the Ducks.
The Bruins will be without forward Brad Marchand, who suffered an undisclosed injury in Saturday's win over Washington. Coach Claude Julien stated only that Marchand is day-to-day. His absence opens a spot for Daniel Paille, who will try to take advantage of the opportunity after struggling in limited action so far this season.
For a full breakdown of the matchup, check out our Facing Off feature.
8 a.m.: The Bruins snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over Washington on Saturday, but they didn't do it in quite the fashion they would have preferred.
The Capitals outshot Boston 26-2 in the third period and 41-21 overall. Only another spectacular performance from Tim Thomas enabled the Bruins to escape with the 3-2 victory.
Now they continue their three-game pre-Christmas homestand by welcoming Anaheim to the Garden on Monday night. It's the only meeting of the year between the Bruins and Ducks, who come in having dropped two straight on their current swing up the East Coast.
Those losses include an embarrassing 3-2 setback against an Islanders club that's won just twice in its last 23 games. But Anaheim is still a dangerous team with plenty of offensive weapons, led by the likes of Ryan Getzlaf (five goals in the last four games), Corey Perry (10 points in last 6 games) and Teemu Selanne, the only active player with more goals than Boston veteran Mark Recchi. Selanne has 616 goals in 1,213 games to Recchi's 569 in 1,602 games, but Recchi has him in assists (935 to 672) and points (1,504 to 1,288).
The puck drops a little later than usual at 7:30 p.m., so check back here throughout the day for updates on all the action.
