Flyers’ Jody Shelley Suspended Two Games for Hit on Adam McQuaid

Philadelphia Flyers forward Jody Shelley has been suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid on Saturday night.

The two players were racing for a puck behind the Boston net, with McQuaid cutting off Shelley’s lane so that Andrew Ference could touch the puck for icing. Rather than let up, Shelley barreled in to McQuaid, sending the young defenseman flying face-first into the boards.

McQuaid lay on the ice for several minutes before eventually getting helped off. He did return to the game.

Shelley was given a five-minute major penalty for hitting from behind and a game misconduct. He’ll miss games this week against Pittsburgh and Montreal. In his career, he has just 52 points in 569 games while racking up more than 1,400 penalty minutes.

Shelley apologized to McQuaid for the hit.
