Jordan Caron Maintains Top Ranking on Bruins Top Prospects List for Third Straight Week

It's been an eventful year for Craig Cunningham.

The 20-year-old center thought his junior days were over for him after he was drafted by the Bruins in the fourth round (97th overall) in this June's draft. But Cunningham, who would have been eligible to play in Providence, and the Bruins couldn't come to terms on a contract, and Cunningham headed back to his junior club in Vancouver.

The Bruins still retain his NHL rights, but Cunningham is no longer property of the Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League, as he was traded Tuesday to the Portland Winterhawks.

The deal sends Cunningham from a Giants squad languishing in fourth place in the WHL's B.C. Division with a 16-16-1-4 record to a Portland club sitting in first place in the U.S. Division with the second-best record in the entire WHL at 25-11-0-3.

"Craig is an elite player, as evidenced by being named the Western Conference finalist for the WHL's Player of the Year award last season," Portland general manager and coach Mike Johnston said in a release. "We're very excited to have him join our team."

Cunningham got off to a blazing start this year, earning WHL Player of the Month honors for September/October with 7-29-36 totals and a plus-14 rating in his first 18 games, but he's just 3-7-10 and a minus-10 in 20 games in November and December. Still, he did have 37-60-97 totals last year, plus another 12-12-24 in 16 postseason games, and could push Portland over the top in the quest for a Memorial Cup berth.

But will the change of scenery push Cunningham up in the Bruins' Top 10 Prospects list this week? Read on to find out.
