Roger Goodell May Implement Trash Talking Guidelines for NFL in 2011

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that the recent surge of trash talk among players has not gone unnoticed.

According to CBS Sports, Goodell addressed the issue of smack talk in a news conference after the owners' meeting on Tuesday.  Throughout the conference, Goodell emphasized the importance of respect between players across the league.

"There's got to be respect among people who play the game," Goodell said. "And I want to make sure it's respected throughout the league and it's something we're going to talk about in the offseason.

"There is also a line you don't want to cross, and we need to make sure we define that and we don't cross that."

The trash talk swapped between the Jets and the Patriots this season definitely fueled some of Goodell's comments, but the commissioner stressed that they would not disallow smack talk altogether.

"I understand the approach of different teams and I think that's great," Goodell said. "I think that's healthy with their different approaches."

The league is starting to reach their limit, however. NFL VP of operations Ray Anderson issued a warning about trash talking last week, reminding the eight NFL playoff teams to "respect the game."

Despite the influx of trash talk this season, escalated by the recent playoff matchup between the Patriots and the Jets, Goodell stated there would be no fines implemented at this point.
