Patrick Chung Shoulders Blame for Failed Fake Punt, Moves On From Mistake

FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots safety Patrick Chung won’t let Sunday’s mistake derail the momentum he gained during an impressive second season in New England.

“Never, you know how I am,” Chung said. “That play is over. That game is over. I’m on to the next one. I just take responsibility for that. Get off of Bill [Belichick]. Get off of [special teams coordinator] Scotty [O’Brien]. Talk to me if you want to talk about that play.”

Chung stood tall and wanted all of the blame for calling for a fake punt in the second quarter of the Pats’ 28-21 loss to the Jets. Chung fumbled the direct snap and lost one yard, which gave the Jets great field position and allowed them to score a touchdown right before halftime. After that score, which made it 14-3, New England’s offense never had a possession with a chance to tie the game or take the lead.

“I just saw a look that we had,” Chung said. “That’s how it goes. You make the call. It didn’t work out for us. Leave Bill alone. Leave Scotty O alone. I take responsibility. Blame me.”

Despite missing two games in 2010, Chung finished second on the Patriots with 89 total tackles, and he also had three interceptions.
