While the league’s annual premier event likely won’t be able to make its way back to Fenway Park for some time, Red Sox executive vice president/COO Sam Kennedy said the team would welcome hockey back to the ballpark in some capacity if an opportunity arose.
“We would absolutely love to do it again. The reaction to an outdoor rink at Fenway was overwhelming,” Kennedy said in an e-mail to Caron. “That said, the NHL obviously has other markets it needs to get to.
“However, we would love to partner with the Bruins and Hockey East again to look what other types of events we might be able to create.”
In December 2009, the rink was built at Fenway, with high school teams and companies renting the ice for pick-up games that they won’t ever forget. On New Year’s Day, the Bruins created some history of their own with an overtime win against the Flyers. A week later, the UNH women’s hockey team and the BU men’s hockey team won games at Frozen Fenway on a picture-perfect night that featured great hockey underneath a steady snowfall.
“The NHL keeps taking the experience to new levels and we are proud to be a small part of the Winter Classics early history,” Kennedy said.
