Report: Michigan Fires Rich Rodriguez as Head Football Coach

The days of speculation are over: Rich Rodriguez has been fired as the head coach of the University of Michigan’s football team.

Fox 2 in Detroit broke the story Tuesday afternoon, citing sources.

Rodriguez left a successful West Virginia program in 2007 to take the Michigan job, where things didn’t work out so well. He went 15-22, compiling the lowest winning percentage (.405) of any coach in Michigan history. In fact, to find anyone even in his area, you’d have to go back to 1891, when Mike Murphy and Frank Crawford together coached the Wolverines to a 4-5 record … which was still a .444 winning percentage. The three coaches prior to Rodriguez all posted winning percentages better than .750, with Lloyd Carr at .753, Gary Moeller at .758 and the legendary Bo Schembechler at .796.

With Rodriguez reportedly gone, the only speculation now is whether Jim Harbaugh will leave Stanford to take the Michigan job. Michigan’s athletic director, David Brandon, “would not immediately name a replacement,” according to the report.
