The Patriots’ season didn’t end the way they wanted, but they now have no choice but to move on.
When looking ahead, what is the best way the Patriots can improve their team?
While there is no guarantee that football will even be played next season, there will be a draft in April regardless of the labor situation. There, the Patriots are in a position of power, owning three of the first 33 picks and having multiple picks in the first, second, third and fourth rounds. They made a huge splash at last year’s draft, adding the likes of Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Zoltan Mesko, Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon Spikes.
Though this year’s draft class isn’t expected to be all that great, Bill Belichick could be able to work his magic in finding several diamonds in the rough.
If the Patriots decided to trade more picks than they use, there is always free agency. Though they’re not likely to make a run at Peyton Manning any time soon, there are some big names the team could consider adding. Among them are running backs like Ronnie Brown or DeAngelo Williams, wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Sidney Rice, linebackers Tamba Hali and Lamarr Woodley and all-world cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. None of those big-name players will come cheap, but all would come with superstar talent that has been lacking on the Pats’ roster in certain areas for years.
Then, of course, there is always the avenue of trades. Chad Ochocinco opened speculation season this week when he hinted he wouldn’t mind playing for Belichick. After the Pats shipped Randy Moss out of town last year, there won’t be any trade that catches anyone in New England completely by surprise.
