Tyler Seguin has the goods to rewrite the Boston Bruins history book, but has last year’s No. 2 overall pick in the NHL draft been the most impressive B’s rookie this season?
Seguin has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 44 games. The sniper has been bounced around from wing to center as well as up and down head coach Claude Julien‘s depth chart as the B’s offense has had trouble dealing with injuries and compatibility. The rookie has shown signs of brilliance in his first NHL season, beating goalies with top-shelf tallies and burning defenders with blazing neutral zone speed.
Brad Marchand could very well be the team’s most exciting player. The checking line winger has wowed the TD Garden crowd with his hustle and toughness — not to mention his three shorthanded tallies. Marshy is 10th among qualified rookies with 20 points and first with a plus 17 rating.
Adam McQuaid (who played 19 regular-season games last season, falling seven games shy of reaching rookie qualification) and Steven Kampfer have stepped up big on defense this season on the B’s blue line. McQuaid has been a beast in front of Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask and has thrown down the gloves eight times to go with seven assists. The 6-foot-5 Prince Edward Island native also sports a plus 14 rating, good for second in the NHL among qualified rookies.
Kampfer, a smooth-skating, puck-moving rookie from Ann Arbour, Mich., has four goals, four assists and a plus 7 rating in 20 contests. His ability to spark the offense has caught the eye of Julien, who opted to stick with him over McQuaid when Andrew Ference returned to the lineup with an injury.
Tuesday, Jan. 18: Kampfer deserves to stay upon Ference’s return.
