Denver Freshman David Makowski Scores Incredible Shorthanded Goal

The University of Denver rallied to beat Michigan Tech 5-1 on Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.  After falling to a one goal deficit, the Pioneers posted five straight unanswered goals.

But that wasn’t the story of the night.

The real story was about Denver freshman David Makowski, who likely scored the longest shorthanded goal in hockey history.

After teammate John Ryder went to the box to serve a penalty for a delay of game, the puck was dropped in Denver’s defensive end.  The Pioneers won the draw, and Makowski launched the puck from behind his own goal line down the ice to clear the zone.

Kevin Genoe, Michigan Tech’s netminder, never saw it coming.  No one did.

According to several reports, the goal was approximately 190 feet.

Makowski was modest in postgame interviews.

“I was just trying to get it out of there,” he said. “I wasn’t really trying to score or anything, but it took a wild bounce and we’ll take it.”
