Derek Jeter: It’s Our Job to Try to Beat Red Sox

Derek Jeter's had himself a rather busy offseason. Yet while he's been dealing with contract disputes, a controversy-hungry media and growing questions about his age and ability from his own general manager, the future Hall of Famer has kept an eye on the Red Sox.

"They added some good players," Jeter said of the Red Sox, according to the New York Post. "I would assume that everyone over there is excited. It’s our job to try to beat them."

It's not the most impactful quote, but it's rare that a Yankee shows up to spring training and has to answer questions about a division rivals' moves. For years, it's been the job of the Red Sox or Rays to beat the Yankees, but after a lackluster offseason in New York, the tables may be turning.

For his part, Jeter's not worried — even if the team doesn't have a full pitching staff yet.

"Somebody’s going to have to step up," Jeter said. "That's basically how it goes. I wouldn't use the word worry."

Not yet, at least.
