Hickory the Scottish Deerhound Wins Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club

Hickory the dog is moving on up.

A Scottish deerhound from a 50-acre farm in Virginia has become an instant celebrity — at least in the animal world –- after capturing best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club.

And now she’s getting used to life in the city. Along with bragging rights, Hickory is also rewarded with a steak from Sardi’s restaurant and a very special walk to the top of the Empire State Building.

Hickory is the first of her breed to be named the country’s top dog and her handler, Angela Lloyd, said that her country dog wasn’t used to a lot of attention.

“She’s not used to lights, cameras and noise,” she said.

Hickory was selected by judge Paolo Dondino of Italy to be among the seven finalists for the prestigious award. Joining her was a Pekingese, a bearded collie, a black cocker spaniel, a smooth fox terrier, a Portuguese water dog and a Chinese shar-pei. Hickory beat a total of almost 2,600 entries.
