Mike Lowell‘s baseball playing days are over, but he’ll always have a special place in Red Sox Nation.
In case that wasn’t obvious enough, the Aug. 3 game in which Lowell homered on the first pitch he saw after a stint on the disabled list won the fans’ vote as the best Red Sox game that aired on NESN in 2010.
The Lowell game topped the Opening Day win over the Yankees, and the poll results say a lot about the respect and admiration that fans have for Lowell, considering most fans probably don’t even remember the details of the game.
The game was a Tuesday matchup with the Cleveland Indians. Josh Beckett got start and pitched a gem. Lowell returned to action after being on the disabled list for more than a month. And even the benches cleared in the eighth inning.
But the night belonged to Lowell. The crowd rose to welcome him back with a standing ovation when he stepped to the plate for his first at-bat in the second inning. Before the fans could sit down, Lowell took the first pitch he saw from David Huff and launched it over the Green Monster.
The blast was a truly special moment at Fenway Park, enough for Lowell to win the competition in a landslide. Lowell garnered better than 95 percent of the votes.
Fans will get to relive their favorite game by tuning in to NESN on Monday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m.
