Record-Setting Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni Scores 100th Career Goal

The primary role for any goalkeeper, of course, is to defend one's goal from assailants by any means necessary. Rogerio Ceni of Sao Paulo, however, is showing that goalies can be offensive-minded as well.

On Monday, the 38-year-old Sao Paulo goalie scored his 100th career goal, according to The Telegraph.

"It was beautiful," said Ceni, when referring to the 30-yard free kick that had just enough oomph to double the Sao Paulo lead nine minutes into the second half against rival Corinthians.

Sao Paolo won, giving the club its first win in 12 games against Corinthians. Sao Paulo improved to second in the league behind the Palmeiras club.

After scoring 21 goals in 2005 for Sao Paulo, Ceni broke the record for keepers back in 2006 on his 62nd goal, passing Jose Luis Chilavert. Since then, no on has come close. The Mail Online reports that FIFA has Ceni for 98 goals, but he still counts two goals scored in unofficial friendlies in 1998 and 2000.

"When a goalkeeper goes on to the pitch, he doesn't think about scoring a goal," said Ceni.
