Derek Jeter Plays Coy, Hints That Red Sox May Have Tried to Sign Him This Winter

There was a lot of media speculation over the winter that Derek Jeter, one of the most beloved Yankees of all time, could somehow get wooed by the archrival Boston Red Sox. It culminated in a New York Post photo of Jeter donning a Boston cap and jersey, sending both fan bases into a frenzy.

Though Jeter has since signed a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year, effectively guaranteeing he’ll retire in pinstripes, he’s still not willing to let that Red Sox talk die.

In an interview with Karl Ravech on ESPN, Ravech asked the shortstop why the Red Sox reportedly tried to sign Mariano Rivera but not Jeter.

“[Laughs] How do you know?” Jeter said.

“Did they?” Ravech pressed.

“I wouldn’t tell you, anyway,” Jeter responded. “I wouldn’t even answer that question, but like I said, this is the only place that I wanted to play.”

Jeter appeared to be just joking, but we won’t know for sure until he releases his memoirs sometime around 2030.
