Brad Bergesen, Chris Tillman, Zach Britton Fighting for Last Two Spots in Orioles Rotation Our weekly look at one item tying together each of the Red Sox' AL East rivals examines the Orioles, who may have only three rotation spots locked up with less than two weeks before Opening Day.

There is promise on the mound in Baltimore, something that has not been said much during a string that has seen the team finish last or next-to-last in the American League in team ERA for five straight years. That doesn't mean there isn't uncertainty.

Beyond Jeremy Guthrie, the likely Opening Day starter, and young lefty Brian Matusz, the ace-in-waiting, there are some question marks. Jake Arrieta, a 25-year-old right-hander, figures to have the No. 3 spot locked up. As many as five guys could claim a stake in the competition for the final two spots.

One of the candidates, Justin Duchscherer, has thrown just two innings as he continues to be bothered by persistent hip issues. That pretty much rules him out at this point in time. Ryan Drese, who last appeared in the majors with Texas in 2006, is a bit of a long shot. That likely leaves Brad Bergesen, Chris Tillman and Zach Britton to fight it out for two openings, although Bergesen is a pretty safe bet for the No. 4 spot.

The 25-year-old Bergesen made 19 starts for Baltimore in 2009 and 28 more last season, which he finished by going 5-3 with a 2.85 ERA over his final 12 outings. Given the youth of the rotation, that experience makes him a virtual shoo-in.

That leaves Britton, 23, and Tillman, 22, in competition with Drese, who provides a veteran option if the organization wants to hold off on its youngsters to start the year.

Based purely on spring training results, Britton gets the nod. He has yet to allow a run in nine innings. However, Tillman is the only one of the two youngsters with major league experience, having made 23 starts for the O's over the last two seasons.

The final two or three appearances by this trio will be very important in determining where they begin the season.
