Throughout his entire career, Oliver Perez has battled inconsistency. Apparently, the New York Mets have seen Perez lose that battle one too many times.
The Mets plan on moving the left-hander to the bullpen in a situational role after another poor start on Tuesday. Pitching against the Astros, Perez allowed three runs in the first inning before even recording an out. The team decided they had seen enough, and will now use him out of the pen — that is, if they don't trade him or buy out his contract.
According to ESPN.com, the Mets have had discussions about moving Perez somehow. Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon reportedly said this winter that he'd be willing to absorb Perez' $12.5 million salary for 2011.
As the report points out, the Mets will likely turn to Tim Byrdak as their left-handed specialist. If that is the case, it will likely mean that Perez is the odd man out.
Outside of mounting poor performances, Perez has always struggled with his command throughout his career, but it is likely his recent drop in velocity that has the team worried most.
