It seems like Tim Wakefield is called upon by the Red Sox to fill a number of different roles each season. On Sunday, he’ll make his first start as Clay Buchholz will be unavailable due to the flu.

Wakefield has started 440 games in his career, but he has made all seven of his appearances this season out of the bullpen, compiling a 5.56 ERA.

Buchholz left Fenway Park early Saturday with what manager Terry Francona called “intestinal turmoil.” Buchholz is now expected to start Monday in the series opener against the Angels.

Wakefield is 4-10 with a 4.18 ERA in his career versus Seattle.
