Rivers was presented with the Red Auerbach Award given to a Celtics player or coach who "best exemplifies the spirit of what it means to be a Celtic through performance on the court and off," according to a press release sent out by the team.
Celtics managing partner and co-owner Wyc Grousbeck presented Rivers with the award, and said the head coach deserves the award not only for his success as a coach, but as a role model to the Boston community.
"Doc Rivers deserves this award because he has proved that not only can you be a great basketball coach but you can be a strong role model in the Boston community and off the court," Grousbeck said. "I am proud to have someone like Doc Rivers as a Boston Celtic because he exemplifies what it means to be a true Celtic."
The presentation of the award, named in honor of the Celtics' legendary coach, general manager and president Red Auerbach, took place prior to the Celtics-Wizards game at TD Garden. Previous recipients of the award include Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Al Jefferson, Ray Allen, and Rajon Rondo.
