When people buy tickets to a WWE pay-per-view event, they generally don’t make the purchase with the expectation that they’ll be kept up to date on current events while they’re watching grown men toss each other around the ring. But on Sunday night, John Cena played the role of Wolf Blitzer to thousands of fans attending Extreme Rules.
“I walk out here every night with hustle, loyalty and respect on my sleeve,” Cena, a Massachusetts native, said shortly after winning the WWE title in a three-man cage match. “That is a credo I’ve adopted from the men and women who defend the freedom of this country.
“[President Barack Obama] has just announced that we have caught and compromised to a permanent end Osama bin Laden,” Cena then said to the crowd, which responded with chants of “U-S-A!”
“This is something tonight,” Cena said while standing on the announcer’s table, “but I feel damn proud to be an American.”
It was truly a fitting event, as only in America can a man wearing jorts standing next to a wrestling ring covered in a giant steel cage inspire some 20,000 people to feel great pride for their home country. And only in America would such a moment be so awesome.
