Paul Konerko Makes Behind-the-Back Pass to Matt Thornton for Early MLB Play of the Year Candidate

Do the Chicago White Sox watch AND1 Mixtapes before games?

Based on some of the plays they make, you'd have to at least consider it a possibility.

Last year's play of the year took place on Opening Day, when Mark Buehrle flipped a ball in foul territory through his legs to Paul Konerko to record an out at first base. It stood as the play of the year in 2010.

On Wednesday night, Konerko made his bid to make that claim for 2011.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th and the White Sox up 6-4, Torii Hunter popped up a bunt short of first base. It was trouble right off the bat. Konerko charged but looked to have no play. That's when he scooped the ball with both hands and threw a Magic Johnson-esque behind-the-back pass to pitcher Matt Thornton, who grabbed it with his bare hand and narrowly beat Hunter to the first base bag.

It's going to take something special to top that one for play of the year.
