Rays Surprisingly Holding Down First Place in AL East After 1-8 Start to Season

When the Rays made their first trip of the season to Boston, things were going about as poorly as possible.

They were 1-8, their designated hitter had just promptly retired amid performance-enhancing drug allegations and it looked like the season may already be over for the defending AL East champs.

That, though, changed rather quickly.

"When they limped into Fenway Park and I was there in mid-April, they really just looked like a really, really weak team," NESN.com's Tony Lee said on CBSSports.com's Baseball Today. "They were still kind of reeling from the Manny Ramirez situation, nobody was hitting. [But] they all of a sudden exploded that night. They won 16-5 and just took off, I think it was [22] of their next [29] that they won. Just the nature of how quickly they turned things around surprised me."
