Boston University and Boston College students typically don't enjoy comparisons between their two schools. To the fans, the extent of the similarities involve the schools’ location on the Green Line and the schools' hatred for each other — and that's it. Now, add one more similarity to that list.
Joe Jones, who served as the associate head coach for the Boston College men’s basketball team in the 2010-11 season, will take over as head coach of the Boston University basketball team, reports the Boston Herald.
Jones started as head coach at Columbia and was responsible for the third-best single-season turnaround in Ivy League history, improving a 2-25 team to 10-17. Jones finished above .500 once with the Lions, going 16-12 during the 2006-07 season.
Jones will replace Pat Chambers, who signed on as Penn State’s head coach despite signing an extension with BU. This past season, Chambers led the Terriers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002. Prior to BU, Chambers served as an assistant coach at Delaware Valley, Philadelphia, and Villanova. Chambers also took over for Jones as a Villanova assistant in 2004.
Jones helped the Eagles to a 21-13 record and a second round NIT appearance in 2010-11. He’ll be taking over for a BU squad that lost leading scorer John Holland to graduation. Chambers had done an admirable job recruiting the past two seasons, shown by the fact that two freshmen started in BU’s first-round matchup against Kansas.
