Johnny Damon Ties Ted Williams on All-Time Hit List With 2,654

Back when Ted Williams played for the Red Sox, Tampa, Fla., was a place for fishing. Now, it's a place where two-time All-Stars match his career stats.

That two-time All-Star was Johnny Damon, who singled Wednesday night to tie Williams with his 2,654th career hit. The two are now tied for 70th all time.

That, of course, is more a product of longevity and consistency than it is a sign of Damon being better than Williams in any way. Both players roamed the Fenway Park outfield during their careers, but the comparison ends there. Williams missed three full seasons during the prime of his career due to World War II, and he missed nearly two full seasons in 1952 and '53 due to the Korean War.

From 1996 (his first full season in the majors) through 2010, Damon has averaged 149 games per season in his time with the Royals, A's, Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers and Rays. Damon is currently fifth among active players, behind Derek Jeter (2,994), Ivan Rodriguez (2,839), Omar Vizquel (2,828) and Alex Rodriguez (2,754).
