In order to make room on the roster for pitcher John Lackey to come off the disabled list, the Red Sox optioned outfielder Josh Reddick to AAA affiliate Pawtucket on Sunday.

Lackey made his first start since May 11 on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics.

The Red Sox chose to send Reddick down rather than a pitcher in order to keep as many arms in the bullpen as possible after Saturday's 14-inning affair with the A's.
