Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount after an altercation with umpire Tony Randazzo.
After arguing balls and strikes in Saturday’s extra-inning win over the Oakland Athletics, Papelbon was thrown out by Randazzo.
MLB issued a statement Tuesday, stating it was suspending the four-time All-Star because of “his inappropriate actions, which included making contact with [the] home plate umpire.”
The suspension shouldn’t affect Papelbon’s availability in the upcoming series against the New York Yankees, as he is appealing the decision.
