Report: Colin Campbell Stepping Down as NHL Disciplinarian, Will Be Replaced by Brendan Shanahan

Amid a minor controversy involving a conflict of interest, NHL senior vice president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell is leaving his post as league disciplinarian, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

"Sources tell TSN [that] Colin Campbell is giving up role as NHL disciplinarian," Dreger reported via Twitter. "Brendan Shanahan will likely take over."

TSN's Bob McKenzie later noted that Campbell will not be relinquishing his duties as senior vice president and director of hockey operations.

Campbell has come under fire for his disciplinary decisions in recent years, most notably in November 2010, when emails between Campbell and former head of officiating Stephen Walkom were released on a website.

His objectivity was questioned this week by a writer in Vancouver, prompting reporters to ask his son, Gregory Campbell of the Boston Bruins, about the appearance of a conflict of interest.

"He doesn't care. I don't care," Gregory Campbell said Tuesday. "His job has absolutely nothing to do with my job and vice versa. He does his job to the best of his ability. I can't control what people write."

Shanahan is currently the NHL's vice president of hockey and business development. He played 21 seasons in the NHL for the Devils, Blues, Whalers, Red Wings and Rangers.
