Rich Gedman’s Son Among Those Selected by Red Sox on Final Day of MLB Draft

NEW YORK — Matt Gedman, the son of former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman, was among those taken by Boston in the final 20 rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday.

A product of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Matt Gedman was selected in the 45th round. He was an All-New England first team selection after leading the Atlantic 10 with a .402 average for the Minutemen.

Matt Gedman could join his father at Lowell, where the elder — who was with the Red Sox for 11 seasons — serves as the hitting coach.

Boston also tabbed John Gorman of Catholic Memorial, the Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year with its 50th and final pick. Gorman, a native of Norwood, went 6-1 with a 0.14 ERA in 51 innings, and also hit .362 while playing third base.

Corey Vogt, a reliever with Keene State University in New Hampshire, was drafted by the Red Sox in the 39th round.

Boston finished the draft with 29 pitchers (21 right-handers), 10 infielders, 10 outfielders and four catchers. Of the 53 players taken, 29 are high schoolers.
