Children Fined $500 at U.S. Open for Opening Lemonade Stand Without Permit

Selling lemonade is a serious matter in Montgomery County, the home of Congressional Country Club, where the U.S. Open is currently taking place.

The parents of two children were fined $500 on Thursday when their children opened a lemonade stand right outside Congressional without a permit, 9NEWS NOW reports. They were apparently warned twice before Jennifer Hughes, the county's director of permitting, handed out the citations.

"Cute little kids making five or ten dollars is a little bit different than making hundreds," Hughes said. "You've got coolers and coolers here."

County officials have since waived the $500 fine and are allowing the two kids to re-open their stand about 100 feet away from its previous location.

But Rene Augustine, the mother of one of the children, still isn't satisfied with the ruling.

"This feels like a whole lot of government to me," she said.

The money was being raised for pediatric cancer, according to Carrie Marriott, mother of the other child.
