Shaquille O'Neal retired from professional basketball on Wednesday, making the announcement via Twitter.
Shaq simply wrote "i'm retiring video:" and included a link to a video announcing his calling it quits — as well as thanking the fans.
O'Neal had one year remaining on his contract with the Celtics, but after he struggled with nagging injuries that kept him out for nearly the entirety of the second half of the 2010-11 season, his retirement does not come as a surprise.
Shaq retires a four-time NBA champion, three-time Finals MVP, one-time NBA MVP, 1993 Rookie of the Year, 15-time All-Star and eight-time First-Team All-NBA team member. He ranks fifth all time in career points. Prior to his retirement, O'Neal was the oldest player in the NBA.
