No one ever likes to lose. Most professional athletes have learned to accept defeat graciously, maintaining their composure regardless of how much the loss hurts. After losing the Copa Libertadores title, though, the soccer club Penarol was unable to accept their loss — and proceeded to fight the winner, Santos.

The teams were competing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the annual Copa Libertadores tournament, which showcases the premier soccer clubs in South America and Central America. The 38-team competition is composed of teams from 11 countries. Santos, a Brazilian soccer club, and Penarol, a Uruguayan club, were competing in the finals of the competition.

Santos ultimately came away with a 2-1 victory, winning the crown.

After the final whistle, the action on the field didn’t end, though. Blows were thrown and a crazy fight broke out — which was apparently started by a fan.

“A [Santos] fan entered the field and provoked us,” Penarol’s Alejandro Martinuccio said, “They have to learn how to celebrate. We had accepted the loss.”

Santos defender Leo saw it differently.

“They were a worthy opponent,” he said, “but they don’t know how to lose.”
