Vote: Who Is Your Favorite Sports Star to Have Played One Year in Boston?

Shaq, we hardly knew ye.

Shaquille O’Neal, a first-ballot Hall of Fame center who wrapped up his 19th and final NBA season here in Boston with the Celtics, announced his retirement from the game on Friday afternoon.

Shaq isn’t the only athlete to, albeit very late in his career, have come through Boston for a one-year stop.

The Red Sox saw Ricky Henderson, Tom Seaver and Juan Marichal swing through Fenway Park for a year each while the Bruins welcomed Brian Leetch to the North End for a season. Joining Shaq as Celtics to have had the honor to don the green and white before (some day, in Shaq’s case) landing a spot in Springfield, Mass., are Dominique Wilkins and Pete Maravich.

Bill Walton, who played the entire 1985-86 season with the C’s, also spent 10 games with Boston the following season, making him an official two-year member of the Celtics and ineligible for the vote, as seen below.
