With Hurricane Irene's New England arrival looming, the Red Sox and Athletics were forced to play a doubleheader on Saturday at Fenway. But it wasn't an easy day for anyone involved, as soggy conditions threatened to jeopardize the completion of both games.
During the afternoon matchup, two rain delays totaled three hours and created some questions as to when the teams would be able to begin their second game of the day. After fans with tickets to the second game were permitted to enter Fenway for the completion of the first game, order was restored and the Sox came away with a 9-3 victory.
With a later than expected start, the Sox jumped out to an early lead in the second game on a David Ortiz home run in the second inning.
Play was stopped once again soon thereafter, though, as heavy rains blanketed the Fenway field. The teams were forced to endure the day's third rain delay, but again the Sox came out after the intermission and cruised to victory.
If the Sox could play like they did on Saturday every time it rains, the team would likely take rain 162 times a year. But you've got to tip your cap to the Fenway grounds crew and everyone who battled through the rain drops, especially those fans who stuck it out through Mother Nature's wrath. Fans were even allowed to enter the second game for free after the rain delay.
The Sox will be off on Sunday and Monday before hosting the Yankees for a three-game set.
