Relive the Moment: Ted Williams Makes Baseball History Hitting .406 in Memorable 1941 Season

by

The closest anyone has come to matching Ted Williams' .406 batting average in 1941 was George Brett in 1980 (.390). Amazingly, Williams started the season with pinch-hitting duties after breaking a bone in his leg. Williams average sat at .400 on the last day of the season, a double-header. Instead of sitting out, Williams played both ends to raise his average to .406. Had the current sacrifice fly rule been in effect during the '40s, Williams would have batted .416.
