The Red Sox are kicking off their road trip shorthanded.

According to Red Sox manager Terry Francona, who appeared on WEEI on Thursday, the team will place Kevin Youkilis on the disabled list on Thursday and will call up catcher/DH Ryan Lavarnway.

Lavarnway is hitting .284 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs in Triple-A Pawtucket but has 30 homers and 85 RBIs between Triple-A and Double-A.

"Were really excited about [Lavarnway]," Francona said. "Maybe this kid comes up and gives us a spark." Francona said he would probably be used as the designated hitter while David Ortiz recovers from bursitis in his right heel.
