Derrick Mason Alludes to SpyGate When Asked About Bill Belichick’s Smack Talk

Bill Belichick doesn’t make a habit of calling out players, whether they’re on his roster or if they play for another team. Yet in Bill Belichick: A Football Life, the Patriots’ head coach was seen sharing some choice words with Derrick Mason during a 2009 game against the Ravens.

Mason, now a member of the rival Jets, was asked about the exchange on Friday, and it turns out the two may not be the best of friends.

“I respect him because he’s a very good head coach,” Mason said of Belichick, according to NJ.com. “They won a bunch of games during those times, when they were allegedly … you know. They won a bunch of games.”

Mason has played against Belichick’s Patriots seven times (including twice in the playoffs), and his team has lost five of those matchups. He’s had varying degrees of success, scoring three times and averaging six catches for 77 yards. The Jets visit the Patriots in Week 5.
