Those are strong words, especially when considering he was a key member of a 2003 Red Sox team that lost in Game 7 of the ALCS to the Yankees on walk-off home run from Aaron Boone. But they really encapsulate the magnitude of the situation.
The Red Sox had an extremely talented roster, were one of the best teams in baseball at midseason, looked poised to be World Series contenders and entered September with a nine-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL wild-card race. Yet the Sox will be on the outside looking in when the MLB postseason begins on Friday.
There have been some disappointing losses and major collapses over the course of sports history. But however you slice it, it's certainly a disappointing end to what was once such a promising season.
