There was a smattering of boos, according to tweets by Mets beat reporters, from the stands at Citi Field.
“This is another moment when I ask: What was the second-best idea Mets dismissed as too dumb to go with pulling Reyes after one AB?” tweeted New York Post columnist Joel Sherman, adding a #worstprever hashtag.
“It’s always funny when the Mets think they are doing something smart only to realize hours later it was really dumb,” tweeted Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe.
It was not immediately clear whether the Mets chose to pull Reyes or if he decided to leave the game. Texas Rangers pitcher C.J. Wilson surmised that it may be precautionary for the injury-prone shortstop.
“Maybe they just pulled him before he pulled a hamstring,” Wilson tweeted, starting a string of tongue-in-cheek tweets.
As a few Mets defenders noted, other teams have done the same with players chasing statistical milestones.
“Yes, others have done what the [Mets] did today,” tweeted ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand, not to be confused with the Bruins’ Brad Marchand. “Doesn’t make it right.”
