Dan Wheldon’s Death Following Horrific Crash Creates Somber Scene at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Photos)

Sunday's IndyCar event in Las Vegas turned from what was supposed to be a celebration of another successful season to one of the most somber scenes you'll ever see in sports.

Dan Wheldon, one of IndyCar's most popular drivers, died in a horrific 15-car wreck. The 33-year-old's car was sent airborn and it slammed into the top wall of the track. Wheldon was flown to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The drivers got together once they received the news of Wheldon's passing and decided to cancel the remaining laps of the race. They elected to honor Wheldon with a five-lap salute.

It was an emotional day, as auto racing has lost a true legend.
